This publication will be published through Design Studio Press in the Fall of 2017.
In the 'Cultural Terrain' section of the book, Conaway explores how the roles of social context, history, and psychology play a part in the process of world-building through costume design. She discusses both historical and modern societies in terms of class, trade, fear, camouflage, and other factors that shape the reasons why societies choose to wear the things they do. By breaking these tendencies down into recognizable patterns, Conaway creates an arsenal of tools with which strong design choices can be made for conceptual worlds in science fiction, fantasy, and beyond.
Below is a sample page of the kinds of notes and details Conaway addresses being aware of for character designers and visual development artists.
